USC players are excited about the Trojans’ new “52” defense, which allows ends to play as linebackers.

But the scheme also relies heavily on two inside linebackers.

Hayes Pullard will play one spot, Lamar Dawson the other.

Dawson, a junior from Kentucky, “just has a completely different look about him, a very professional look,” Kiffin said. “He’s coming to work ready to get better .... I don’t think he was pleased with his performance so far since he’s been here.”

Dawson started four games as a freshman and nine last season.

Though a few players adjust and star immediately when they arrive at USC, most take a few years to develop, Kiffin said.

“It takes two years to really get everything going, especially when you come from a ways away,” he said, adding that Dawson “seems to really be doing that.”
