USC running back Tre Madden gave it a try Tuesday.

The junior tailback, who has been sidelined all season because of a toe injury, was in full pads and participated in a few drills.

But Madden said afterward that the toe remained “pretty sore” and that he was taking it “day by day.”

“It takes a long time to loosen up,” he said. “It’s real sore all the time, actually. It’s very frustrating. One of the toughest things I’ve been through.”

Madden rushed for more than 100 yards four times in the first five games last season, but suffered a hamstring injury that slowed him the second half and forced him to sit out the Las Vegas Bowl.

He still finished as the second-leading rusher with 703 yards.

Asked if he would consider redshirting, Madden said he would talk to Coach Steve Sarkisian and doctors at some point, but that he is still trying to return this season.
