Mouthwatering Thai memories

Share

Our mouths watered with delicious memories rekindled by Jerry Haines’ article, “Studying the Food Chain in Chiang Mai” (Oct. 6). We fondly remember -- and still taste -- all those wonderful combinations of flavors, textures and aromas that filled our minds and stomachs when we walked the streets of Chiang Mai.

What an eye-opener to find out that one can take a cooking class. It’s back-to-school time for us retired teachers.

As I read Haines’ article my mind was filled with the sights and smells of Thailand. Thirty years ago I lived in the fishing village of Sattahip. Pushcarts, smoking woks and enticing spices are ingrained in my memory, especially the barbecued chicken with sweet red chili marinade.

For all the wonderful foods and aromas and magnificent temples, the main attraction is the Thai people. Even the wild tuk-tuk drivers have a constant smile and courtesy. When you are lost, they will go out of their way to help you.

Reading Haines’ lovely piece made me ache to return to Thailand to see its friendly people and beautiful temples and to sample the delicious foods.
