Santa Ana : Council OKs 60-Unit Senior Housing Project
A unanimous City Council on Monday gave the green light to construction of a 60-unit apartment complex for senior citizens in a south Santa Ana neighborhood.
Following the advice of the city’s planning staff, the council voted to change the zoning of the almost one-acre site near Warner and Pacific avenues from multiple-family residential to a special development district. The Planning Commission also had recommended approval of the Seacrest Development project.
The complex will be located near shopping, medical facilities and transportation, making it convenient for the elderly, said city planner Linda Hale.
The site, at 2201 S. Pacific Ave., is currently vacant. At a public hearing before the vote Monday, an area resident told the council that he favored the development because it would help relieve blighted conditions in and around the lot. Vice Mayor P. Lee Johnson, who lives less than four blocks away, said the development would constitute a vast improvement over “the weed-infested, trash-strewn empty lot that it is now.”
At the suggestion of Councilwoman Patricia McGuigan, the architect was directed to double the number of parking spaces for the handicapped to four. The complex will have 61 parking spaces.
