Ballgame Isn’t Over for Anaheim’s Mayor

The Brea City Council, poking a little fun at the feud between the California Angels and the City of Anaheim, has passed a resolution for the “benefit” of Anaheim Mayor Don Roth.

The resolution refers to an incident this month at the annual Anaheim Chamber of Commerce “Angels Day.” Roth expected to sit at the head table and read the city’s proclamation wishing the team well, as Anaheim mayors have done for the last 10 years. Instead, Roth got what city officials called a snub: He was told there was no place for him at the head table and that Angels owner Gene Autry would not accept the proclamation.

Brea Resolution No. 4-9-85, passed last week, reads:

“Whereas, the California Angels opened their 25th Silver Anniversary season by holding an opening-day ‘Play Ball Luncheon’ at the Anaheim Marriott; and

“Whereas, Anaheim Mayor Don Roth was not allowed to play ball; and

“Whereas, Mayor Don Roth was evicted from the head table and forced to play a game of Musical Chairs with the also-snubbed Rams Director of Operations Jack Faulkner and Anaheim City Manager Bill Talley; and

“Whereas, a famed cowboy star has decided to remake an old song to be titled, ‘Back on the Dias (sic) Again’; and

“Whereas, it appears the Anaheim Chamber operates under a ‘Red Patterson’ influence; and

“Whereas, Mayor Don Roth never really liked baseball anyway; and

“Whereas, the City of Brea will be having Brea Recognition Day on June 12, 1985, at Anaheim Stadium.

“Now, therefore, be it resolved, due to the aforementioned abuse heaped upon Mayor Don Roth, to placate the Mayor, the Brea City Council hereby extends an invitation to join them on June 12 and sit in his own chair for the entire game and be allowed to present a proclamation to (Brea) Mayor Clarice A. Blamer.”
