Apparently unhappy with his assignment and possibly bothered by the heat, a Peter Pitchess Wayside Honor Farm inmate took leave without permission, a sheriff’s spokesman said. Gabriel Esquer, 29, of Compton, who was sentenced to a year for assault, was discovered missing from his beef cattle job in minimum security. The Castaic detention facility was shut down while a head count was made and a search conducted, sheriff’s spokesman Lynda Edmonds said. Evidently, Esquer “just walked away,” Edmonds said.
