San Francisco accountant Lawrence Figur has been charged with helping a client defraud the United States out of $1.4 million in taxes, and with failing to pay taxes on the money and Mercedes he got in exchange, according to a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office. Assistant U.S. Atty. Robert Fourr said Figur is accused of helping an officer of Oil Exchange Corp. of Oakland understate corporate income for 1978 by $2.8 million, resulting in an underpayment of taxes by $1.4 million. Fourr said the corporation existed mainly on paper. He said the officer, Jean Holland, was given immunity from prosecution for her cooperation in a separate case several years ago against her former husband. Figur is also charged with evasion of more than $130,000 of federal taxes on the $275,000 in cash and the Mercedes 450SL he allegedly got as payment for preparing the Oil Exchange return, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
