BRIEFLY : Wagner to Stick With Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys Coach Tom Landry, who decided after the team’s last game to keep a punter, thereby freeing Danny White to concentrate on quarterback, said that Bryan Wagner of Cal State Northridge probably will be on the team when NFL rosters are reduced to 45.

Wagner, who has averaged more than 45 yards per punt during training camp, is in competition with fellow rookie Steve Saxon.

“Wagner is just an extremely strong kicker,” Landry said. “And he’s flexible. This is really the first time in a long time that we’ve had strong legs in training camp among our punters. I think that Wagner and Saxon can be NFL kickers.”

Wagner would also handle kickoffs and could be used on field goals longer than 55 yards.

Waldorf Is Off, but U.S. Wins

Duffy Waldorf of Tarzana won one of three matches, but the U.S. team still captured its seventh straight Walker Cup with a 13-11 victory Thursday over Great Britain in Pine Valley, N.J.

It was the 27th win for the United States in the world’s oldest international golf competition. Great Britain has won twice, with one match in the biennial event ending in a tie.

On Thursday, Waldorf lost his match to Sandy Stephen.

Wednesday morning, Waldorf and Sam Randolph of Santa Barbara lost to John Hawksworth and Garth McGimpsey in a foursome match.

That afternoon, however, Waldorf defeated David Gilford in singles competition.

The teams began the final day at the par 70, 6,691-yard Pine Valley Golf Club tied at 6-6. But the United States took command, winning three of the four morning matches and splitting the other to take a 9 1/2-6 1/2 lead.

Nicks to Play Team From Kansas

The undefeated North Pole Nicks will play the winner of the game between Hays, Kan., and Liberal, Kan., tonight at the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita.

Steve French, formerly of Saugus High and College of the Canyons, will be the starting pitcher for the Nicks. If North Pole faces Liberal, the opposing pitcher could be University of Texas left-hander Greg Swindell, who was 19-2 this season.

In four tournament victories, the Nicks are batting .330 and have scored 35 runs, compared to a .224 average and 15 runs for the opposition. The regular-season champions of the Alaska League have 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts and 129 steals for the season.

Also alive in the double-elimination tournament is Santa Maria, an 8-3 winner Thursday over San Diego.
