Gaynor’s Passing Sets Up Caylor as CS Long Beach Beats Hawaii, 33-30

Cal State Long Beach rallied behind the passing of quarterback Doug Gaynor to beat the University of Hawaii, 33-30, in a nonconference football game Saturday night.

In the fourth quarter, after the 49ers’ Curtis Cummings recovered a fumbled punt, Gaynor guided Long Beach to Hawaii’s six-yard line. Dave Caylor then kicked a 23-yard field goal for the win.

The 49ers trailed the Rainbows, 23-0, midway through the second quarter, when Gaynor began hitting his receivers. He was 9 for 19 in passing in the second quarter when the 49ers cut the deficit to 23-16.

Caylor kicked a 43-yard field goal to give Long Beach its first points. Martin Sartin scored on a one-yard run to complete a 56-yard drive. Gaynor then passed 11 yards to Charles Lockett for the first of his three touchdown passes.

Hawaii took the second half kickoff and marched 80 yards in 10 plays with quarterback Greg Tipton scoring on a four-yard run. After that the Long Beach defense did not allow the Rainbows past the 49ers’ 47-yard line.

Gaynor led the 49ers on scoring drives of 73 and 26 yards in the third quarter, each time hitting flanker Troy Ory for touchdowns. The first one was for nine yards and the second was a five-yard pass play.

It was the first win of the season for the 49ers after two losses. Hawaii is 0-3.
