Water Polo Roundup : Cypress College Loses to Cerritos in Sudden Death

Tim Hedrick scored with 33 seconds remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period Tuesday to lift the Cerritos College water polo team to a 10-9 win over Cypress in a South Coast Conference match played in the Chargers’ pool at Cypress.

Each team scored in the first two overtime periods, Garth Maijala giving Cypress a 9-8 lead with 1:30 left in the first and Matt Hohne pulling Cerritos even, 9-9, with 1:59 left in the second. Hohne led Cerritos (2-2 in conference, 2-9 overall) with four goals, while Shawn MacFarlande and Hedrick each added two.

Alan Skawinski, Brian Howe and Kevin McKee each scored two goals for Cypress, which drops to 0-4 and 0-21. The Chargers had to forfeit 11 wins on Oct. 8 because it had used an ineligible player. Goalie Vince Ortego had 17 saves for Cypress.

In Pacific Coast Conference action:

Orange Coast 13, Grossmont 10--Eric Keller, a freshman from Los Amigos High School, scored six goals to help the Pirates defeat the Griffins at Orange Coast College. The Pirates, ranked fourth in the Southern California Community College poll, improve to 4-0 in conference and 12-2 overall, while the Griffins, ranked eighth, drop to 2-2 and 8-7.

Mike Bidwell led Grossmont with four goals and Jeff Sadler added three.

In Inland Conference action:

Rancho Santiago 20, Citrus 12--Darin Haskin scored six goals to help the Dons hand the Owls their first loss. Charles Sommer added five goals and John Gessner had two for Rancho Santiago.
