LETTERS : Great Tales About the Gaels

I don’t know how you writers do it. Steve Springer’s article today, “Those Gaels, What Tales,” was tops. It sure brought back memories of those great St. Mary’s teams. Slip Madigan was a big name then, and Herman Wedemeyer was one of the great backs of all time. I liked your story about the plow, but I heard it first about Minnesota recruiting around 1930. About the time of Bronko Nagurski. It still is a good story, whoever originated it.

Just for the record, I played football in 1932, and was awed by the power of such a small college as St. Mary’s. I believe that Knute Rockne’s influence helped all Catholic schools in recruiting the best athletes in those days. There never was, and probably never will be, a coach like Rockne.

Keep up the great work of uncovering great stories. The ones who lived through them know just how talented you are in covering it exactly as it was.
