Police have arrested a suspect in the rape last weekend of a woman living near El Modena High School.

The suspect, Baltazar V. Castro, 26, was caught Tuesday morning in the east Orange residential area where the Sunday rape occurred, officials said.

Lt. Dean Richards said Castro was originally arrested as a prowler, but when police determined that the suspect also fit the description of the alleged rapist, he was booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of that crime.

A key element in the arrest, Richards said, were the bite marks on the suspect. He explained that the 35-year-old woman who was raped in her home about 7 p.m. Sunday had fought her attacker and bitten him several times.

The woman, who was alone in her house at the time, heard a “suspicious noise.” When she investigated, she discovered a man who had broken into her home, police said. The woman was treated for bruises after the attack, police said.

Bail for Castro, an undocumented alien, was set at $100,000, Richards said.
