College Tennis : Stanford Men Defeat Pepperdine to Complete NCAA Team Titles Sweep

Patrick McEnroe and John Letts defeated Pepperdine’s Gilberto Cicero and Robbie Weiss, 6-2, 6-3, at Athens, Ga., Tuesday to clinch a 5-2 victory as Stanford won its sixth NCAA men’s team tennis championship in the last 10 years.

McEnroe, whose brother John also played for Stanford, said: “I can’t describe how good this feels.”

The victory by the sixth-seeded men’s team gave Stanford a sweep of the team titles. The women’s team won Monday at Austin, Tex.

In other winning matches for Stanford, Dan Goldie defeated Kelly Jones, 7-6, 5-7, 6-3; Jim Grabb beat Weiss, 6-3, 6-4; McEnroe beat Marty Laurendeau, 6-2, 7-5, and Scott Moody downed Craig Johnson, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2.

Augustine Moreno beat Eric Rosenfeld, 6-1, 6-1, and Doug Sachs downed John Letts, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, for Pepperdine’s only points.

Stanford ended the year with a 19-5 record; Pepperdine was 22-8.

Top-seeded Caroline Kuhlman of USC won two singles matches in the NCAA women’s individual championships at Austin, Tex., but she and Dena Levy were defeated in doubles by Miami’s Ros Riach and Cathy Richman, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The USC pair were seeded third.

Earlier, Kuhlman had convincing wins over Trinity’s Elvyn Barrable of Trinity, 6-2, 6-1, and Clemson’s Ingelise Driehuis, 6-1, 6-4. But fourth-seeded Heliane Steden of USC lost to Cynthia MacGregor of San Diego, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2
