NBA Roundup : Bulls Top Knicks, 101-99, on Jordan’s Record Finish

Michael Jordan set an NBA record by scoring Chicago’s final 18 points and made an 18-foot jump shot with one second remaining to give the Bulls a 101-99 victory over the New York Knicks Friday night at Chicago.

Jordan, leading the NBA in scoring with a 38.4 average, finished with 40 points. With the score 99-99, Jordan took an inbounds pass near his own basket and drove down the left sideline before connecting on his lean-in shot. After a timeout, the Knicks’ Gerald Wilkins missed a three-point shot as time expired.

The previous NBA record for consecutive points by a player for his team is 16, set last season by former Cal State Fullerton star Leon Wood while he was with Washington. Wood is now with New Jersey.

Jordan had tied the score, 85-85, with 6:29 left to start his big scoring spurt. He later scored 10 points in an 87-second span.

Dallas 130, Phoenix 122--Rolando Blackman scored 6 of his 31 points in overtime as the Mavericks rallied to win at Phoenix.

The loss snapped Phoenix’s three-game winning streak and was the Suns’ first loss at home in five games this season.

Alvan Adams’ layup nine seconds into the overtime period gave Phoenix a 118-116 lead before Dallas rattled off eight straight points, with Blackman scoring four of them. Blackman’s jumper with 52 seconds remaining made it 126-120 and sealed the Mavericks’ sixth straight victory over the Suns in the past three seasons.

Mark Aguirre finished with 28 points for Dallas while Derek Harper had 25. The Suns’ Walter Davis scored a game-high 32.

Washington 115, Houston 99--Akeem Olajuwon met his mentor and received an unrequested lesson. Moses Malone, who has tutored Olajuwon in the Texas summer leagues, scored 34 points to lead the Bullets over the Rockets at Landover, Md.

Malone sank a club-record 20 free throws and also grabbed 13 rebounds. Jeff Malone added a season-high 38 points on 15 of 26 shooting for the Bullets.

“I love playing against him,” Moses Malone said of Olajuwon. “We’re very good friends. I like the way he plays--he plays hard.”

Playing without injured Ralph Sampson, Olajuwon was limited to 17 points on 5 of 13 shooting and 7 rebounds.

The Bullets won their third straight, improving to 5-6, while the Rockets, in the first game of a four-game road swing, dropped to 6-4.

Boston 135, Golden State 120--Larry Bird made four three-point shots and scored 32 points as the Celtics won at Boston for the 46th straight time.

Kevin McHale had 23 points and Robert Parish 19. The Warriors have not won at Boston since Jan. 29, 1978.

Portland 127, San Antonio 114--Clyde Drexler and Kiki Vandeweghe each scored 26 points as the Trail Blazers held off an Alvin Robertson-led rally to defeat the Spurs at Portland.

The Spurs cut a 102-88 Portland lead to 106-102 with a 14-4 rally sparked by Robertson, who led all scorers with 34 points. Portland led, 113-110, with 4:12 left and then had a 14-4 spurt of their own to claim the victory.

Detroit 120, Philadelphia 110--Isiah Thomas and Adrian Dantley each scored 27 points to lead the Pistons at Philadelphia.
