Hoover Coach John Johnson was celebrating his team’s 14-13 victory over University City with his family when his little son asked him by how much they won.

“We won by one point,” Johnson said, “but I don’t know how.”

Hoover won the San Diego Section 2-A playoff game Friday night by getting two pass interceptions in the end zone by defensive back Stacey Domaille and two penalties that led to University City missing a 41-yard extra point attempt.

Hoover (8-3) will play at Avocado League champion Oceanside (8-2) in a quarterfinal game Friday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. University City dropped to 7-3.

Joe Odom scored from two yards out as Hoover took a 7-0 lead with its first drive of the game.

University City tied the game late in the first quarter on a 47-yard run by Paul MacRenato, who burst up the middle, cut to his left and ran up the sideline for a touchdown.

Quarterback Michael Walker gave Hoover a 14-7 lead by directing a six-play, 47-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter. Walker was 4-for-4 passing for 42 yards and scored the touchdown on a six-yard run.

University City twice drove past the Hoover 20 but did not score as Domaille intercepted passes by quarterback Brian Sexton.

Sexton finally put University City in the end zone with 10:03 left in the game on a one-yard sneak. But an illegal procedure and personal foul penalty on the extra point attempt forced University City kicker Ron White to attempt a 41-yard extra point. White slipped on his attempt and the ball sailed wide right.
