ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : Katella Edges Tustin in Double OT

Katella High School defeated Tustin, 46-45, in double overtime Friday night to advance to the championship game of the Laguna Beach Tournament.

The Knights play Corona del Mar at 7:30 tonight. Katella was led by Brett Smith in the double overtime with six points. He had 12 in the game.

In other Laguna Beach Tournament play:

Lynwood 72, Huntington Beach 68 (OT)--Despite Kevin Brazzel’s 28 points and Jeff Flory’s 16, the Oilers lost. Huntington Beach plays Estancia today at 12:30 p.m.

Serra 61, Estancia 59--James Moses made a 35-foot shot as time ran out for the Cavaliers (2-1). Moses scored 28 points.

Steve Barkley scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for the Eagles (1-2), who played the fourth quarter without Brian Tift.

The senior suffered a knee injury the extent of which is not yet know.

In the Cerritos Gahr Tournament:

Long Beach Wilson 55, Cypress 52--Despite 19 points from Matt Civiella and 17 from Frantz Reyes the Centurions were eliminated.

Randy West scored 26 and Sonny Reynolds 13 for Bruins (2-1).

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Whitney 68, Costa Mesa 58--Chris Barnes scored 22 points and James Justice had 20 to lead Whitney to the victory in the tournament’s third-place game. Tim Felter led Costa Mesa (1-2) with 10 points.

In the San Luis Obispo Tournament:

Ocean View 74, Burroughs 69--Ocean View won on a pressure defense that forced turnovers and on an 89% free-throw average. Ocean View will face South Bakersfield at 8 p.m. tonight at San Luis Obispo. Tom Pickard, Ocean View forward, led his team with 14 points, 5 rebounds and on-court leadership. In Orange Lutheran Tournament semifinals:

Trabuco Hills 66, Orange Lutheran 59--Gordon McNeill led the scoring for the Mustangs (3-0) with 18 points, followed by John Welch, who had 17.

Geoff McArthur was the leading scorer for Orange Lutheran (1-2) with 20 points. Orange Lutheran will play Brethren tonight for third place.

Mary Star Of The Sea 53, Brethren 52-- Dewey Dominguez scored 17 points to lead Mary Star (2-1) to the win with 14 points from Rich Negrete.

Chris Tatlum scored 24 points for Brethren.

Mary Star of the Sea will play Trabuco Hills for the championship tonight. In the Gahr-Ceritos Tournament:

Wendell Lauderdale had 21 points and Michael Keith scored 19 to lead Kennedy to the win. Danny Davidson has 14 assists for the Fighting Irish (2-1). Lauderdale also grabbed 7 rebounds.

Chris Arce scored 20 points and had eight rebounds for El Rancho (1-2).

Kennedy plays at 3 p.m. at Cerritos High School for the consolation championship.

In nonleague:

Los Amigos 90, Santa Ana Valley 72--Gene Altamirano scored 20, Jim McGee 15, J.J. Jenkins 16 and Walter Skipps 13 for the Lobos (1-0).

Steve Beagle scored 16 for the Falcons (0-2).

Servite 78, Montclair 46--Nick Marusich had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Friars (1-1) at Montclair. Shawn Sullivan also scored 14 for Servite, and Brian Kennedy added 13.

Magnolia 68, Villa Park 51--Victor Bueuelos scored 21 points to lead the Sentinels (2-0) at Villa Park.

Steve Waldrip scored 14 for the Spartans.

Buena Park 71, Savanna 60--Kevin Graddy scored 21 points, Gary Hunter 19 and Mike Poscano 14 for the Coyotes (1-1). Poscano had 11 rebounds and Graddy 9. Savanna is 0-2.
