Nwokolo to Take On Philippine Champion

Having failed to capture the California welterweight title, Young Dick Tiger will take a shot at the Philippines Tuesday night.

Tiger, the African welterweight champ, will face Dioncio Castillo, the Philippine titleholder, in the 10-round main event of the monthly card in the grand ballroom of the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

Tiger was born Charles Nwokolo, nephew of the late world middleweight and light heavyweight champion. Nwokolo came to this country from his native Nigeria several months ago, unbeaten in 14 professional fights, and has since won two of his three American bouts, losing for the first time last month to California champion Felipe Canela.

Castillo, who now lives in Honolulu, is 22-2.

Also on Tuesday’s card will be Elias Madrid (14-0-1, 12 knockouts) of Sylmar. The super lightweight is coming off an impressive outing, a first-round knockout over David Guerra in Madrid’s first fight in nearly two years. Madrid still doesn’t have an opponent for Tuesday night. Several have already dropped out for various reasons, but matchmaker Jerry Niss remains confident there’ll be someone in the other corner for Madrid’s scheduled eight-rounder.

Also on the card, bantamweight Oscar Chavarria (3-1, 2 knockouts) of Bell meets Carlos Monzano (10-4, 5 knockouts) of San Pedro in an eight-rounder; welterweight Otis Pimpleton (4-1-1, 1 knockout) of Las Vegas faces Rod Starks (5-4-1, 2 knockouts) of Westminister in a six-rounder; and super bantamweight Juvenal Molina (5-5, 1 knockout) of Pico Rivera will oppose Jose Hernandez (2-3) of Escondido in a five-rounder.

First fight is set for 7:30 p.m.

It’s Toys For Tots night. Fans are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy, to be given to a needy youngster for the holidays.

Garcia Wins State Amateur Title

Alex Garcia has added yet another title to his growing list.

The North Hollywood super heavyweight won a unanimous decision over Kevin Ford in Sacramento last week to capture the state amateur title.

There were no knockdowns in the fight, but Ford received two standing eight counts.

The 25-year-old Garcia (21-4, 17 knockouts) is already the reigning national amateur champion among super heavyweights and a Southern California Golden Glove champion. Ford is the Police Athletic League’s national amateur titlist.

To get to Sacramento, the 6-2 1/2, 215-pound Garcia had to first win a box-off at the Westminister Boxing Club the previous week. That he did by knocking out Pat Freeman in the second round of a scheduled three-rounder. NOTABLE
