Leslie O’Neal, a primary force in the San Diego Chargers’ defensive improvement before he suffered torn knee ligaments in the season’s 13th week, was named the Associated Press defensive Rookie of the Year Monday.

Before his injury O’Neal had 12 1/2 sacks and helped transform the Chargers into one of the league’s top pass rush units.

O’Neal, who said Monday he hopes to return to the lineup by the start of the 1987 season, feared the injury might deprive him of Rookie of the Year honors.

“I was a little surprised to be named, but I think it shows we have some quality people on this defense and have a lot to look forward to,” O’Neal said.

“I’m still trying to build a name for myself, and I’ve made a good start. Coming back from this injury gives me some extra incentive, in that some people said I was on the verge of going to the Pro Bowl when I was hurt. That’s an inspiring thought, and this accolade makes me feel good. It would be very fulfilling if I could help the team get to the playoffs next year.”

O’Neal, who wears a brace extending from mid-thigh to ankle, said he is apprehensive about regaining his quickness and strength.

He has never done much weightlifting with his legs, but his recuperative program will force him to do so. “Maybe I will get faster and more flexible,” he said.

“I can look at guys like Curt Warner and Kellen Winslow (who had similar injuries) and not worry. Some people say Curt is running stronger and better than before he was hurt.”

A two-time All-American out of Oklahoma State and the eighth player picked in the draft, O’Neal finished with 34 votes. Miami linebacker John Offerdahl, a second-round pick, received 20 votes.

Despite missing the final three games, O’Neal finished fourth in the AFC in quarterback sacks and his five sacks in a game against Dallas was an NFL high this season.
