Iowa Coach Tom Davis keeps shuffling the deck and dealing winning hands.

Substituting freely, as usual, Davis watched his top-ranked Hawkeyes wear down third-ranked Indiana, 101-88, in a Big Ten Conference game Thursday night at Iowa City, Iowa.

“I think we’re probably the deepest club in the league, one of the deepest in the country,” Davis said. “The way we press and run, we need to go eight guys deep.”

Davis, who came from Stanford to replace USC Coach George Raveling at Iowa this season, is 18-0 since taking over the Hawkeyes.

Reserve guard Jeff Moe sparked a 19-4 second-half outburst that allowed Iowa to break the game open. Moe hit a three-point shot with 15:24 left to snap a 59-59 tie and added two other field goals as Iowa raced to a 78-63 lead with 11:17 left.

Iowa, 6-0 in the conference, took over sole possession of the Big Ten lead with the victory and became the first team to score 100 points against Indiana (14-2, 5-1) since Bobby Knight became coach of the Hoosiers in 1972.

Moe and Kevin Gamble had 17 points apiece for Iowa, which had six players score in double figures. Daryl Thomas scored 22 points for Indiana.

Purdue 87, Illinois 86--Kip Jones made a free throw with one second left, and the fifth-ranked Boilermakers (15-2, 6-1) escaped with a Big Ten victory in overtime at West Lafayette, Ind., when Doug Altenberger of the ninth-ranked Illini (13-3, 5-2) missed an ensuing technical foul shot.

Jones’ first free throw rimmed out, but he made the second, bringing fans and players onto the court. Officials called a technical, but Altenberger’s shot hit the back rim and bounced out.

The Boilermakers had tied the game, 80-80, in regulation on a three-point shot by Doug Lee at the buzzer.

North Carolina pulled away with a 24-6 spurt midway in the second half en route to its 14th straight victory. Wake Forest lost its 22nd straight ACC game.

Alabama 88, Auburn 82--Jim Farmer scored 20 points, and the No. 13-ranked Crimson Tide (14-2, 7-0) held off the No. 17-ranked Tigers (10-4, 3-3) for a Southeastern Conference win at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Crimson Tide, which won its 11th straight game, increased a 24-21 lead by scoring 15 consecutive points on the way to a 49-28 halftime lead. Auburn got within 81-77 in the final two minutes, but Farmer steadied the Crimson Tide with a three-point play.

Kansas 86, Nebraska 65--Danny Manning scored 23 points as the Jayhawks (12-5, 4-1) extended their home winning streak to 43 games by trouncing the Cornhuskers (11-6, 1-3) in a Big Eight game at Lawrence, Kan.
