Thirty-five vehicles were involved in a series of chain-reaction crashes in dense fog that killed one person and forced closure of westbound lanes of Interstate 205 at the north end of the San Joaquin Valley. In all, eight accidents involved 25 cars and 10 trucks, the California Highway Patrol reported. One woman was killed and 13 people were injured. Several big rigs collided on the freeway near Grant Line Road near Tracy, officers said. Other pileups then occurred, mostly rear-end collisions within a mile east of the first wreck, Officer Ken Milligan said. The CHP said some accidents may have been caused by drivers traveling too fast in the fog, then braking suddenly when the first accident came into view. The dead woman’s name was not released.
