Orange County College Roundup : Baca Leads Titans to 7-6 Victory Over San Luis Obispo

Mark Baca went 4 for 4 and scored two runs Monday to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 7-6 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a men’s nonconference baseball game on Titan Field.

With the Titans trailing, 3-1, in the fifth, Baca had a run-scoring single and then scored on a throwing error for a 5-5 tie. Ken Garcia doubled and Greg Mannion tripled to bring in Garcia for a 4-3 Fullerton lead.

Pitcher Mark Beck (1-2) struck out 14, walked 3 and allowed 9 hits in 9 innings for Fullerton (4-5).

Chapman 6, Southern California College 4--Shortstop Jeff Kidwiler went 3 for 4, including two doubles and a two-run homer, to lead the Panthers in a nonconference at Hart Park.

In men’s tennis:

Northeast Louisiana State 5, Chapman College 2--Despite victories by the top two singles, Miles Walker and Olivier Amerlinck, Chapman (2-2 and ranked third in Division II) lost to Northeast Louisiana (4-3 and No. 17 in Division I) at Ridgeline Country Club.

Walker defeated Wille Jansson, the ninth-ranked player in Division I, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. Amerlinck defeated Sean Cole, 6-1, 6-1.

Arizona State 7, UC Irvine 2--Mike Cadigan won his singles match and Trevor Kronemann and Mark Kaplan won in doubles but it wasn’t enough as the Anteaters lost in a nonconference men’s tennis match at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

Cadigan defeated Andy Roedigen, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Kronemann and Kaplan defeated Doug Sachs and Jeff Woods, 6-3, 6-2.

In women’s tennis:

San Diego State 8, UC Irvine 1--The No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Courtney Weichsel and Debbie Strombeck defeated Anne Moeller and Dana Bleicher, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, for the Anteaters’ only victory in a nonconference women’s tennis match at San Diego

In women’s basketball:

UCI 55, Cal State Fullerton 53--Cheryl Hoffman scored the game-winning free throw with one second left to lead the Anteaters over the Titans in the Bren Center.
