6.9 Quake Jolts Parts of Central, Northern Japan
A strong earthquake registering 6.9 on the Richter scale today jolted areas of central and northern Japan, rattled buildings and temporarily halted rail service.
But there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage even from Onahama, a coastal town 100 miles northeast of Tokyo, where the quake recorded an intensity of 5 on the Japanese scale of 7.
The epicenter of the 9:40 a.m. quake was under the ocean off Fukushima prefecture, 150 miles north of Tokyo.
A tsunami, or tidal wave warning, was issued for the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan’s main island, but it was soon canceled.
The tremor shook buildings as far away as Tokyo, officials said.
High-speed bullet train service was halted for several hours on the line north of Tokyo while officials checked tracks for damage.
