A 21-year-old man who took refuge in his garage and fired more than 50 rounds from several guns was shot by a San Diego County deputy sheriff early Wednesday morning, police said.

John Rockwell Totten Jr. was shot once in the left arm after he began aiming at sheriff’s deputies who had surrounded the house, Sgt. Greg Reynolds said.

Totten was listed in fair condition Wednesday at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He is being held on $7,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

Totten began firing randomly after a family dispute at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said. Sheriff’s deputies tried to talk Totten into surrendering but he continued to fire into the air and into the ceiling of his garage at 13250 W. Lakeview Road. At one point, he fired at a sheriff’s deputy across the street from the garage.

When Totten threatened to shoot and blow up nearby cars, deputy Alan Skoglund fired once with a 12-gauge shotgun and hit him in the upper left arm, police said.

Totten was given first aid at the scene and taken by Lifeflight to Sharp Memorial Hospital. He has been charged with assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon and firing at an inhabited building.
