According to an FBI affidavit unsealed in federal court in San Francisco, a disillusioned Hells Angels member spent 2 1/2 years on the FBI payroll amassing evidence used to indict key members of the motorcycle gang. Court papers disclosed the undercover agent purchased weapons, explosives and drugs and alleged that the Angels obtained powerful munitions made for the military. The 183-page affidavit asserted that many club members “derive the bulk of their income from the manufacture, importation, distribution and trafficking in controlled substances, particularly methamphetamine and cocaine.” The affidavit was used as the basis for 26 raids on Hells Angels strongholds in the Bay Area, part of a five-state sweep last month that resulted in nearly 40 arrests on drugs and weapons charges.
