Girls’ Prep Basketball Roundup : Capistrano Valley Pulls Away for 78-63 Victory Over Cerritos

Heather Schoeny scored 20 points and Holly Anderson 19 as Capistrano Valley High School defeated Cerritos, 78-63, Monday in the quarterfinals of the Costa Mesa girls’ basketball tournament at Costa Mesa High School.

The Cougars led, 56-54, entering the fourth quarter but pulled away behind the play of Julie Swain and Lainie Spence. Swain scored all eight of her points and Spence had six in the fourth quarter.

Schoeny and Anderson each had 14 rebounds.

The Cougars face Palos Verdes in the semifinals tonight at 6:20.

In other Costa Mesa tournament games:

Palos Verdes 41, Ocean View 34--Heather Burge scored 18 points to lead Palos Verdes. Erika Whistler had 17 points for the Seahawks. Ocean View plays Cerritos today at 3.

Tustin 47, Schurr 44--Melissa Hammond had 12 points and Cathy Allard and Tanya McGuire each had 10 to lead the Tillers. Tustin plays Chino tonight at 8 in a semifinal games.

Chino 44, Cypress 38--Serena Murillo scored 20 points to lead Chino. Stacey Kosaka had 10 points for the Centurions, who play Schurr today at 3.

Woodbridge 59, North Torrance 44--Guard Kathy Millat scored 20 points and Randee Mahoney 11 points to lead the Warriors. Woodbridge (7-4) will meet Estancia in the consolation semifinals today at noon.

Estancia 44, Canyon 36--Forward Shannon Suzuki and center Debbie Keyes each scored 14 points to lead Estancia, and Shawna Newbern added 10 points. Lisa Ino led Canyon with 13 points. Kari Erkenbrack contributed 10 points.

San Clemente 52, Costa Mesa 44--The Tritons’ full-court press forced 15 Costa Mesa turnovers, and Julie Anderson scored 10 points and Willie Wilmont 13 points for San Clemente. Costa Mesa’s top scorer was Vanessa Henderson with 16 points. San Clemente will meet Westminster in today’s consolation semifinal game at 1:30.

In the La Quinta tournament:

La Quinta 62, Villa Park 17--Amy Jalewalia had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 8 steals to lead the Aztecs in the semifinals at La Quinta High School. The Aztecs (6-3) will face Valley Christian tonight at 7:30 in the championship game.

Valley Christian 62, Santa Ana Valley 17--Tanya Zwagerman scored 19 points and Amy Klein 14 to lead the Crusaders into the finals. The Falcons face Villa Park in the third place game tonight at 6.

South Torrance 45, Los Amigos 17--Kim Stafe scored 18 points to lead South Torrance, which plays El Modena today for consolation championship.

El Modena 2, Troy 0--The Warriors had just four players and were forced to forfeit. Troy has five players ill and one with a broken arm.

In the Edison-Marina tournament:

El Toro 73, Fountain Valley 63--Sara Bone scored 21 points and Karie Yoshioka 17 to lead the Chargers (11-0) in the championship quarterfinals. Yvette Ybarra scored 21 points and Stacey Hisaka 18 for Fountain Valley. El Toro will play Edison in a semifinal game tonight at 7.
