College Roundup : Rabbitt Leads UCI to 1-2 Sweep

Buffy Rabbitt led a 1-2 UC Irvine sweep in the women’s 1,500 meters Saturday in the San Diego State Invitational track meet at San Diego State.

Rabbitt’s time of 4 minutes 27 seconds beat teammate Shama Factor, who finished second in 4:31.61. Irvine’s Judy McLaughlin finished fourth in 4:35.42.

The Anteaters’ Jennifer Thomas finished third in the 5,000 meters (16:39).

In the men’s competition, Irvine’s Mike Morales won the discus in the open division with a throw of 161 feet 11 inches. Teammate Greg Houlgate finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:04.

In nonconference baseball:

Fullerton 10, Portland 6--Ralph Ramirez had three hits, including two home runs, to lead host Fullerton (13-7).

The score was tied, 6-6, in the eighth, when Fullerton scored four runs. Bobby Jones broke the tie with a single that scored Mark Razook. After a fielder’s choice allowed another run, Mike Ross singled to drive in two more. Danny DeVille (1-0) pitched 2 innings of no-hit relief to pick up the victory. Rich Ekman (1-1) took the loss for Portland (5-2-1).

Cal State Dominguez Hills 11, UC Irvine 9--Larry Hokanson hit for the cycle and drove in four runs as Dominguez Hills (8-8) held on for the victory at Anteater Field.

Hokanson went 4 for 5, including a three-run homer in the first inning. Irvine (12-11-1) had the tying runs on base in the ninth, but relief pitcher David Haggard got the final out for the save. Joe Lacues pitched six innings for the victory. Joe Seeburger went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Irvine.

Chapman 4-4, University of San Diego 3-3--Chapman (11-10) received complete games from Dave Byrd and Jeff Mooney to sweep San Diego at Hart Park in Orange. Byrd (3-2) struck out six batters in the first game, and Mooney (3-3) struck out three in the second. Chris Cutliff had two RBIs in the first game for Chapman, and Jeff Kidwiler drove in one in the second.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Cal Baptist 5-12, Christ College Irvine 1-6--Steve Caylen hit a three-run homer and Steve Whatley allowed just one run in seven innings for host Cal Baptist (5-11, 2-0) in the first game. Sean Washington went 2 for 3 for Christ College (4-12, 0-2). Chris Hansen (3-4) was the loser.

In the second game, Greg Kerr drove in four runs on three hits for Cal Baptist. Jeff Imbriani was the winning pitcher. Christ College was led by Steve Thornhill, who went 2 for 5 with a solo home run. Tom Kostic (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 4--Chapman (7-5, 5-0), ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division II, clinched the match when the doubles team of Paul Charlesworth and Barry Hancock defeated Joe McDonough and Alex Havrilenko, 6-1, 7-5. Host San Luis Obispo, 8-3 overall and 4-1 in CCAA play, is ranked No. 4 in the nation.

In the Roadrunner Softball Tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 2, Fresno State 1--Missy Coombs scored on a fielder’s choice in the seventh to give Fullerton the victory in the championship game at Las Cruces, N.M. Fullerton defeated Nebraska, 1-0, and Hawaii, 4-3, earlier in the day to reach the final. Anjie Bryant was the winning pitcher in all three games for Fullerton.
