Barry Bonds: Taking after his father, Bobby, who holds the major league record with 35 game-opening homers, the Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder has hit 4 game-opening homers this season and 11 in his career.

Andy Van Slyke: The Pirate center fielder has 1 hit in 25 at-bats against Mike Scott of the Houston Astros. “The guy has a voodoo doll of me on his mantle,” Van Slyke said.

Pete Incaviglia: The Texas Rangers left fielder, who made 27 errors in his first two seasons, made none in 83 chances through Thursday and credited coach Davey Lopes. “I never had anybody show me how to catch and throw the ball properly before.”

Roger Craig: The acquisition of Brett Butler was supposed to provide a set lineup, but the San Francisco manager used 22 lineups through 40 games in an attempt to snap the Giants out of their offensive slump.

Greg Gagne: The Minnesota Twins shortstop struck out 40 times in his first 115 at-bats, a pace that could break Rob Deer’s American League record of 186, set last year.

Doyle Alexander: At 37, the Detroit Tigers right-hander rolls on, having had 38 straight starts in which he has pitched 6 innings or more. Alexander is 13-2 in his 20 starts with the Tigers.

Powerless: Three Dodgers, Mike Davis, Mike Scioscia and Alfredo Griffin, are among 21 major league players who have more than 100 at-bats without a homer. Seven of the 21 hit 10 or more homers last year: Wade Boggs, Jim Rice, Mel Hall, Bill Doran, Robby Thompson, Willie McGee and Davis.

Matt Young: The former Dodger, now with the Oakland Athletics, has yet to pitch in a game because of a sore arm but has been ejected twice for comments from the bench.
