Local News in Brief : Dana Point : Land-Use Review Role Seen for City’s Leaders

Share

Supervisor Thomas F. Riley says he wants the newly elected officials of Dana Point to begin having an immediate say in land-use decisions affecting the three communities that will become a new city Jan. 1, 1989.

Riley has proposed that the Board of Supervisors create a special land-use appeal review board, whose members would be Dana Point’s five City Council members-elect.

The board, under the Riley proposal, would make recommendations on land-use appeals before the Board of Supervisors that affect property in Capistrano Beach, the present Dana Point and the former coastal area of Laguna Niguel, the unincorporated communities that will make up the new city.

The appeals are the result of actions taken by the county Planning Commission.

“These individuals have received the mandate from residents in the newly formed city of Dana Point, and I can see no reason why they should not become active participants in the appeal process,” Riley said in a letter to the other four supervisors. “In this way, the council-elect can begin . . . involvement in the decision-making process.”

Voters elected a five-member City Council for Dana Point and approved cityhood in the June 7 election. The council members-elect are Bill Bamattre, Judy Curreri, Mike Eggers, Eileen Krause and Ingrid McGuire.

The Board of Supervisors will consider Riley’s proposal Tuesday.
