Local News in Brief : L.A. OKs Funding Plan for Metro Rail
A plan to fund the second $2.2-billion phase of Metro Rail subway system was approved Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council on a 13-1 vote.
The plan, which must still be approved by other local, state and federal agencies, increases the city’s overall commitment to the 17.7-mile system between downtown and the San Fernando Valley from $69 million to about $150 million. The first 4.4-mile, $1.25-billion segment is already under construction and the plan calls for extensions to North Hollywood and the Mid-Wilshire District to be completed by 1997.
The vote came after a member of the House Appropriations Committee and leading advocate of the project, Rep. Julian Dixon (D-Los Angeles), held a City Hall news conference to pledge his help in seeking the additional $500 million in federal funds called for in the second-phase funding plan.
