Marathon Offers $25,000 Bonus for Fast Times

A $25,000 incentive bonus has been added for the Dec. 11 San Diego International Marathon, it was announced Wednesday.

The event’s coordinator, In Motion Inc., said the bonus would be awarded to a winning woman who completes the marathon under 2 hours 30 minutes and a winning man who completes it in under 2:10.

Runners from 25 states and 6 countries already are entered, including Malcolm East of Great Britain, Sam Sitonik of Kenya, Joel Hernandez of Mexico and Janine Aiello of San Francisco.

More than 4,000 runners are expected to compete in the marathon, which will be run on a new course that begins in Balboa Park and winds through downtown.

BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego announced that Shawn Hamilton, a 6-foot 8-inch 225-pound forward from Mesa, Ariz., has signed a letter of intent to join the Toreros for the 1989-90 season.

Hamilton attended Northern Arizona as a freshman and started 14 games, averaging 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds. He is playing his sophomore season at Mesa Community College in Arizona.

Athletes in Action (6-9) dropped its fourth consecutive game, losing to Arizona State, 104-94. Former San Diego State player Zach Jones led AIA with 29 points.

FOOTBALL

Three members of the San Diego State team have been named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic team: Roman Fortin, a junior offensive tackle, and twin brothers Brad and Mitch Burton. The Burtons, juniors from El Capitan High School, were selected as defensive linemen.

Reservations are currently being taken for “Fouts Day: San Diego’s Salute to Dan Fouts,” which will take place Monday, Nov. 28, at the Sheraton Harbor Island East Hotel.

NBC announcer Ahmad Rashad, a former teammate of Fouts at the University of Oregon, will be the master of ceremonies. Guest speakers will include Don Coryell, John Robinson and Ed White. Formal attire will not be required for the 7 p.m. dinner.

Tickets are $100 per person, with tables of 10 available for $1,000. Seating is limited and reservations must be made before Tuesday. Proceeds will benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation.
