High School Basketball Roundup : Torrey Pines in Final of Florida Tournament

Darren Cox sank both ends of a 1-and-1 with 5 seconds remaining to give Torrey Pines a 67-65 victory over Dunbar of Washington D.C. in the semifinals of the Ft. Myers tournament Thursday night.

Torrey Pines will play Miami Carol City, ranked No. 8 nationally by USA Today, in the finals today.

Courtie Miller scored on a 14-foot jumper to tie the game at 63-63 with 54 seconds remaining. Miller had just 11 points because he was called for three fouls in the first quarter and missed most of the first half.

Romeo Roach, a 5-foot 4-inch guard, put Dunbar ahead, 65-63, on a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left. Center Kevin Flanagan countered with two free throws on a shooting foul with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game, 65-65.

Dunbar (8-1) then turned the ball over to set up Cox’s shots. Deon Murray missed a 3-pointer that hit the front of the rim for Dunbar as time ran out.

Cox led all scorers with 26 points, and Flanagan added 19 points and 9 rebounds for Torrey Pines (13-0). Murray had 23 and Mike Smith 15 for Dunbar.

Santana tournament

Southwest 56, Grossmont 34--Southwest led, 56-34, with 7 minutes remaining when Grossmont Coach Frank Foggiano was assessed three technical fouls and under CIF rules was ejected. When Foggiano did not leave the bench, the referee forfeited the game to Southwest. Adalberto Silva scored 26 points, and Sean Swensen added 10 points for Southwest (8-5).

Lincoln 100, Clairemont 77--Joe Temple scored 3 points as Lincoln (12-1) raced to a 52-26 halftime lead. Aaron Wilhite had 19 for Lincoln, Darryl McMillan and Victor Dean each scored 14 and John McCartney had 11. Clairemont (7-7) lost despite Ray McDavid’s 42 points and 19 rebounds.

Hilltop 62, Chula Vista 55--Trailing, 39-38, at the end of three quarters, Hilltop outscored Chula Vista, 24-16, in the fourth quarter for the victory. Donal Hardin led Hilltop with 19 points, and Malcolm McCurty had 14. Sean Desmond scored 14 for Chula Vista (4-10) and Jeff Hawkins added 11.

Rohr Aztec tournament

Montebello 87, Basic (Las Vegas) 69--Marcus Valley of Montebello was the tournament’s most valuable player and led the Oilers with 29 points in the championship game.

Dimond (Alaska) 58, Christian 56--For Dimond, Bryan Anderson scored a game-high 36 points and had seven 3-pointers in the third-place game at Montgomery. David Jeremiah had 30 points and six 3-pointers for Christian. Christian led, 32-28, at the half, but Dimond outscored Christian, 19-14 in the fourth quarter.

San Dieguito 62, El Cajon Valley 48--San Dieguito trailed, 14-8, after the first quarter but came back with 25 second-quarter points to take a 33-27 halftime lead in the fifth-place game. Brian Malewicz scored 19 points for San Dieguito and Matt de La Pena added 16. Litho Solomon had 16 for El Cajon Valley (2-6) and Kevin Davis had 12.

Castle Park 75, Montgomery 42--Jerry Gomez scored 14 points and Chuck Brown added 10 for Castle Park in a battle of winless teams in the seventh-place game. Castle Park (1-10) took a 28-11 lead after the first quarter. Montgomery (0-8) was led by 18 points from Albert Maldonado. Only four players scored for Montgomery; 13 scored for Castle Park.

Baron Optimist tournament

Sweetwater 69, Point Loma 68--Point Loma tied the game twice late in the fourth quarter but fell short in the third-place game at Bonita Vista. Sweetwater took a 53-39 lead going into the final quarter, where Point Loma outscored Sweetwater, 29-16. Joseph McDowell led Sweetwater (13-1) with 16 points and teammates Carlos Campbell and Cortez Rice added 15 and 12 points. J.J. Stokes had 17 points and Marcel Brown added 14 for Point Loma.

Crawford 57, University City 55--Crawford led by nine with 2 minutes remaining, but University City (8-4) pulled within 54-53 with 31 seconds remaining in the fifth-place game after switching to a half-court trap. But Chris Johnson stole the inbounds pass as Crawford (10-2) went to a press. Johnson converted the steal into a three-point play on a basket and subsequent free throw as Crawford led 57-53. Johnson had 21 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter to lead Crawford and Jerome Price had 19 to pace University City.

Bonita Vista 44, Mar Vista 40--Alan McNamee led the host Barons (3-8) with 13 points and teammate Matt Gibbs added eight. For Mar Vista (1-10), which turned the ball over 23 times--15 in the first half--Elija Burns had 15 points and Tim O’Neal added 11.

Mt. Carmel tournament

Poway 64, San Pasqual 53--Gabby Awbrey scored 26 points as Poway won the championship and remained undefeated (11-0). San Pasqual made 19 of 23 free throws to stay in the game.

Mt. Carmel 67, Oceanside 56--Jeff Hensley scored 20 points to lead Mt. Carmel in the third-place game. Mt. Carmel was 17 of 18 from the free throw line.

USDHS 55, Ramona 52--USDHS’s Peter Ellis was 3 for 3 in the last 2 minutes to help the Dons to the victory in the consolation championship. Ramona was up by three points with over 3 minutes to play but Ellis hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds remaining, giving USDHS (5-3) a 53-49 lead. Ramona’s Nate Hallingsworth hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to bring Ramona within 53-52, but that’s as close as it would come. Ellis had 16 points and 8 rebounds and Greg Santos had 14 points and 5 steals for USDHS. Tony Newman had 18 points for Ramona.

Irvine Woodbridge 67, Mira Mesa 65--Woodbridge outscored Mira Mesa, 25-7, in the second quarter of the seventh-place game. Mira Mesa rallied and had a chance to win, but a 3-point attempt at the buzzer failed. Mira Mesa had two players sent to the hospital with an eye injury and a twisted knee. Mark Zigler led Mira Mesa (3-8) with 22 points.

Chino tournament

El Camino 87, Claremont 76--Dee Boyer scored 18 points and had 7 blocks to lead El Camino into the finals against Glendora tonight. Shaun Scurry added 17 points for El Camino (7-3).

Oceanside 41, Bonita Vista 37--Mildred Conston scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had 12 blocked shots for Oceanside (7-3), which outscored Bonita Vista 14-7 in the fourth quarter. Kecha Fowlkes scored 11 points and Tonya Lee added 10 for Oceanside. Mellisa Standridge paced Bonita Vista with 14 points.

San Marcos 41, Serra 38--Susie O’Brien scored 25 points and was 11 of 15 from the free throw line for San Marcos. Wendy Smith led Serra (1-8) with 11 points.

Chino 46, Patrick Henry 38--Sorii Epps scored 17 points and Rachelle Johnson had 15, but it wasn’t enough for Patrick Henry (7-4).

Rohr Aztec tournament

Montgomery 51, Valhalla 40--Jeannette Best scored 25 points for Valhalla, but it wasn’t enough. Roxanne Shoas had 12 to lead Montgomery and Claudia Medina added 10.

Dimond 52, Carlsbad 46--Carolee Liddelow scored 16 points for Dimond and Jenny Siart had 24 for Carlsbad.

Lincoln 53, El Cajon Valley 44 (OT)--Sheila Dixon led Lincoln with 23 points and Tonya Mays added 10. Debbie Duhaney scored 17 points for El Cajon Valley.

Ramona tournament

Ramona 73, Christian 41--Tournament most valuable player Kris Miller scored 23 points, had 15 rebounds and blocked 9 shots for Ramona (6-1). Three other Ramona players scored in double figures as well: Meleea Van Patten (12), Kendra Brunje (12), and Lanice Karcher (11).
