The International Olympic Committee’s executive board agreed in principle to drop rhythmic gymnastics from the 1992 Games at Barcelona.

The final decision will be made after hearing from the Soviet Union’s Yuri Titov, president of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), in an IOC session at San Juan, Puerto Rico, in August.

At the same time, however, the executive board agreed to add 21 events in eight sports for Barcelona. In addition, it increased the size of the women’s singles tennis field from 32 to 64 players and agreed to retain the men’s and women’s 50-meter freestyle in swimming. It also will consider increasing the number of teams in women’s handball and volleyball.
