From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A distraught 68-year-old man eluded a police manhunt one day after his estranged wife and a neighbor were shot and killed and three others were wounded at a birthday party. Carlos Barreto was being sought for questioning. Police Sgt. Steve Harrison would only say, “He’s still at large,” when asked whether authorities were close to finding the man, whose car was found at a bus station in nearby Indio. Barreto’s estranged wife, Elaine Renee Barreto, 37, died at the house where she was holding a party for several people with February birthdays, police said. Neighbor Shawn Robertson, 30, died at Desert Hospital. Robert Coon, 30, shot in the stomach, was in critical condition. Two others were treated and released.
