Four Papers Gain Top Contest Awards

The Orange County Register was one of four large-circulation sports sections in the country to be accorded triple-crown status in results of the annual Associated Press Sports Editors national contest, the results of which were announced Friday.

The Register, the Dallas Morning News, the Detroit Free Press and Newsday were accorded Top Ten status in Sunday, Daily and Special Section categories. The Los Angeles Times was given honorable mention in each category, and the San Bernardino Sun was honorable mention in the middle circulation (50,001-175,000) daily category.

The best finish in the writing portion of the contest among area sportswriters was a third place in the middle circulation feature category to Jim McCurdie of the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Robert Kuwada of the Press-Telegram was fourth in the enterprise category; Cindy Robinson of the San Bernardino Sun was fifth in news writing, and Pete Danko of the Riverside Press-Enterprise received honorable mention in news.

In the large circulation writing category, Julie Cart and Bill Plaschke of The Times received honorable mentions in feature and event categories, respectively, as did Art Thompson III of the Register in news and the staff of the Herald Examiner in enterprise.
