CSUN’s Bonner Receives WFC Offensive Honor

Sherdrick Bonner of Cal State Northridge has been selected Western Football Conference offensive player of the week after passing for 233 yards and accounting for both Matador touchdowns in a 19-18 win over Portland State.

Bonner, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound senior, completed 17 of 33 passes, including the game-winning 11-yard pass to Billy Nealy with 41 seconds remaining. Bonner was sacked three times but avoided trouble on several other occasions to complete passes or scramble for yardage.

The previous week, Bonner completed only 10 of 26 for 63 yards in a 14-10 victory over UC Davis.

Cal State Northridge (4-1) has moved up No. 15 in this week’s NCAA Division II football poll. CSUN had been No. 18. Portland State, which was No. 11 before losing to CSUN last week, fell out of the Top 20.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which improved to 5-0 with a 19-0 victory over UC Davis, moved up one notch to No. 7.

Tony Simmons of Antelope Valley College has been named the Foothill Conference offensive player of the week.

Simmons, a freshman tailback from St. Petersburg, Fla., gained 228 yards in 14 carries and scored four touchdowns in the Marauders’ 34-6 victory over Rio Hondo on Saturday.

Bobby Webster of Glendale College and LaShante Parker of Pierce have been selected as the Western State Conference co-offensive players of the week.

Webster, a freshman from Pasadena High, gained 186 yards in 33 carries and scored four touchdowns in the Vaqueros’ 37-27 victory over Valley.

Parker, a freshman from Palmdale High, rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns in Pierce’s 41-20 victory over Compton.

Bob Burns of Cal State Northridge has been invited to the 16th John Hancock All-American Golf tournament, Oct. 25-27, at El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Tex. Burns was the NCAA Division II individual champion last season.
