Padres and Show Part Company
Pitcher Eric Show and pitching coach Pat Dobson, who had been at odds all season, both became former San Diego Padres Thursday.
The Padres chose not to exercise the option on Show’s contract by the required deadline, allowing him to become a free agent.
Under terms of Show’s contract, the Padres had to exercise the option by Oct. 10 or buy out his contract for $250,000. If the option had been exercised, they would have been obligated to provide him arbitration rights, under which he could have filed for between $1.1 million and $1.7 million.
“I’d rather leave anyway, if you want to know the truth,” Show said. “All I can say is . . . I hope the (buy-out) check comes fast.”
Meanwhile Dobson confirmed that he had joined the Kansas City Royals as pitching coach.
Show, 6-8 with a 5.76 earned-run average, had feuded with Dobson and Manager Greg Riddoch over his demotion to the bullpen this season.
Show, who had missed much of the 1989 season with a back problem, complained that Dobson was unsupportive and spent little time trying to help him. Dobson said he tried to help Show improve but that the pitcher was aloof and showed little interest in the instruction.
