Mike Lude, longtime University of Washington athletic director, will retire on Jan. 15 but will remain at the school through Dec. 31, 1991, in another capacity, the university announced.

The announcement came on the same day the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Lude was asked to resign at the end of the academic year but wanted to remain as athletic director for another school year.
