For the third time in less than a month, a Major Soccer League coach has been fired. And for the second time in two weeks, a team president has replaced the departing coach.

Wichita president Roy Turner took over for Coach Terry Nicholl “citing a need for fundamental organizational change as a result of inconsistent team performance,” according to a press release faxed by the club.

The Wings (13-20) are in last place in the Eastern Division, 5 1/2 games behind front-running Kansas City.

Nicholl follows Dallas’ Billy Phillips and Cleveland’s Kai Haaskivi out of the MSL coaching ranks this season.

The Sockers’ Paul Wright, who strained his left groin in Friday’s 10-3 victory over Wichita, and Ben Collins, who strained his right hamstring in Sunday’s 5-1 victory at Dallas, are listed as questionable for Thursday’s home game against Dallas.

JUDO

Valerie Lafon, 17, of Mira Mesa, a home school student, was named to the U.S. National Judo Team, which will be going to the World Championships July 25-28 in Barcelona, Spain. She also qualified for the Pan-American Games Aug. 5-8 in Havana, Cuba.

MEN’S GOLF

Creighton Aotani shot an even-par 74 at the 5,600-yard Stardust course to lead USD to a 400-423 victory over Point Loma Nazarene College. Rusty Fallin was low man for PLNC at 75.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

USD, ranked No. 14, took four of six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches for a 7-2 victory over No. 15 San Diego State. USD, playing on its home courts, improved to 3-1. It was SDSU’s first match of the season.

MEN’S TENNIS

At UCLA, the No. 2 Bruins eased by San Diego State, 8-1, to improve to 5-0. SDSU--which got its point from the No. 3 doubles team of Joe McDonough and Kerry Safdie--fell to 1-2.
