Mike Marshall, unhappy with a reduced role and Boston’s inability to trade him, remained absent from the Red Sox’ training camp in Winter Haven, Fla., Thursday and his wife faced a court appearance on a traffic citation received as she drove to pick him.

Said General Manager Lou Gorman: “As far as we’re concerned, he walked out. He left without permission.”

Gorman said a $250 fine for the unauthorized hike will stand. He also threatened to impose an additional fine of $1,000 a day if Marshall is not back today.

“I had some things to take care of (Thursday) and I’ll be back (today),” Marshall said. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Marshall and his wife, Mary, were seen and heard in an apparent argument when she picked him after his walkout Wednesday.

Then it was learned Thursday that Mary Marshall was cited for “failing to obey a police officer by driving around a barrier” at the entrance to the ballpark. She faces a $55 fine.

Nolan Ryan gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings and Geno Petralli hit a home run in the bottom of the 12th, leading the Texas Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at Port Charlotte, Fla. Ryan, whose final exhibition game comes next week against his son, Reid Ryan, who pitches for the University of Texas, walked three and struck out seven. “Everything’s pretty much on schedule,” Ryan said.

Baltimore pitcher Ben McDonald had to be scratched from his scheduled start Thursday against the Montreal Expos at West Palm Beach, Fla. The Oriole right-hander warmed up, but experienced stiffness in his elbow. . . . Rafael Ramirez was three for four with two runs batted in, Doug Baker drove in two runs and Curt Schilling pitched out of a ninth-inning jam, leading the Houston Astros to a 7-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Bradenton, Fla. Barry Bonds was two for three with three RBIs for Pittsburgh. Bonds was making his second start since spending five days in Pittsburgh with his wife, who gave birth to their second child. . . . Tony Pena drove in two runs with a bad-hop bases-loaded single in a five-run fourth inning, and Jack Clark hit his fourth homer as the Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-4, at Winter Haven, Fla., and extended their winning streak to five games.
