BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Arizona Tax to Aid Cactus League
Gov. Fife Symington signed a measure into law that gives three counties a way to raise money needed to compete with Florida in offering spring-training sites to major league baseball teams. It won legislative approval June 19.
The law allows Maricopa, Pima and Yuma counties to impose a 50-cent-per-night tax on recreational-vehicle pads and another of $2.50 per car-rental contract. It also lets Pima and Yuma counties increase local sales taxes by one-tenth of 1% if voters approve.
Seven teams, including the Angels, will be left with spring sites in Arizona when the Cleveland Indians move from Tucson to Homestead, Fla., in 1993.
The Detroit Tigers traded right-handed pitcher Dan Petry to the Atlanta Braves for minor leaguer Victor Rosario. Petry is 2-3 with a 5.01 ERA in 54 2/3 innings. . . . Nolan Ryan will skip his scheduled start against Oakland Thursday as a precautionary measure because Ryan has been experiencing shoulder tightness. He will not start again until July 2.
