BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Tigers Put Incaviglia on Disabled List
Detroit Tiger outfielder Pete Incaviglia was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right wrist. Incaviglia injured the wrist during a bench-clearing brawl at Boston on July 6. He aggravated the wrist over the weekend.
To replace Incaviglia, the Tigers recalled right-handed pitcher John Kiely from triple-A Toledo. Kiely, 26, was 2-2 with two saves and a 2.12 ERA in 34 appearances with Toledo, all in relief.
Baltimore pitcher Jeff Ballard, who has been bothered by a bruised chest muscle, declared himself fit after pitching for about 10 minutes in the bullpen. He is expected to start Saturday against Oakland.
Pirate rookie John Wehner, a Pittsburgh native, had nine hits in 19 at-bats (.473) in his first week as a major leaguer.
In his third game, he went five for five against Atlanta Tuesday night. The Three Rivers Stadium scoreboard flashed: “Paul Waner 3,152 hits. Lloyd Waner, 2,459 hits. John Wehner, 7 hits.”
“I wish they hadn’t done that,” Wehner said. “Those guys are in the Hall of Fame. I’ve been up here a week.”
Gerald Perry had only seven starts for the St. Louis Cardinals in the first half of the season, but since Pedro Guerrero broke a leg July 7, the day before the All-Star break, Perry has been the cleanup hitter.
He went 0 for 7 in his first two starts, then had 11 hits in 25 at-bats in his next six, with two home runs and two doubles.
