COLLEGE BASKETBALL REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS : Minnesota Adds Michigan State to Upset List

Sophomore reserve Townsend Orr scored 20 points and Minnesota beat No. 11 Michigan State, 70-66, in a Big Ten Conference game Saturday at Minneapolis, the Gophers’ second victory over a ranked team in eight days.

The Gophers (11-6 overall, 3-1 in the Big Ten) upset then-No. 11 Michigan, 73-64, on Jan. 11.

Orr made a three-pointer at 8:10 of the second half for a 46-43 lead. Orr also broke ties at 47-47 and 52-52 with three-pointers, the last giving Minnesota the lead for good with 4:00 to play.

Freshman Shawn Respert scored 13 points for Michigan State (12-2, 2-2).

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

EAST

Alvin Pearsall had a basket and two free throws in the final 33 seconds of overtime and George Washington (10-4, 3-1) scored a 73-70 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Rutgers (9-5, 2-2) at Washington. . . . Monroe Brown scored 19 points and Penn State (12-4) won for the fourth time in seven days, 87-73, over Miami of Ohio (9-5). David Scott had 31 points for Miami.

MIDWEST

Tony Bennett, who had 18 points and 12 assists, sank a three-pointer with two seconds left to give Wisconsin Green Bay (12-1) a 69-66 victory over Butler (11-4) at Indianapolis. . . . Herb Jones had 20 points as Cincinnati (12-3, 2-1) turned 18 turnovers by Memphis State (8-5, 3-1) into a 75-66 Great Midwest Conference victory at Cincinnati.

SOUTH

Shaquille O’Neal had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Louisiana State (9-4, 3-1) to an 83-70 Southesatern Conference victory over Mississippi State (10-5, 2-3) at Starkville, Miss. . . . Jo Jo English had 23 points, including a three-point play with 35 seconds left that gave South Carolina a 71-69 SEC victory over Georgia in an SEC game at Columbia, S.C. Litterial Green had seven three-pointers and 27 points for the Bulldogs (8-6, 1-3).

SOUTHWEST

Craig Upchurch scored all of his 19 points during the second half and Houston (12-3, 2-1) ended Rice’s 13-game home winning streak with a 74-60 victory over the Owls (11-5, 1-1) in a Southwest Conference game at Houston. . . . Reggie Smith scored 23 points and Texas Christian (13-3, 3-1) scored an 80-76 SWC victory over Texas (10-7, 3-1) at Fort Worth, Tex..

ROCKIES

Khari Jaxon had 13 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocked shots as New Mexico (10-6, 4-0) beat Hawaii, 79-67, in a Western Athletic Conference victory at Albuquerque, N.M. Phil Lott had 20 points for the Rainbows (8-6, 1-2). . . . Doug Larson scored 18 points and Keith Bonds added 17 to lead Colorado State (8-9, 2-1) to a 67-48 WAC victory over Utah (11-5, 1-3) at Salt Lake City. . . . Gary Trost scored seven points during a 10-0 run that led Brigham Young (12-2, 3-1) to a 66-45 WAC victory over Air Force (5-10, 0-4) at Provo, Utah.

WEST

J.R. Rider scored 27 points as Nevada Las Vegas (14-2, 6-0) rallied from an 11-0 deficit and registered a 79-67 victory over San Jose State (1-12, 0-5) in a Big West Conference game at San Jose. The Rebels have won 11 consecutive games . . . Sam Crawford scored 22 points to lead New Mexico State (13-1, 5-0) to a 90-77 double overtime victory over Pacific (5-9, 1-4) in a Big West game at Stockton. . . . Kelvin Woods scored five of his 11 points in the final 1 1/2 minutes, including the winning basket with 20 seconds left, to give San Diego (10-6, 2-1) a 70-69 victory over San Francisco in a West Coast Conference game at San Francisco (8-8, 0-3). . . . DeWayne Lewis scored 18 points to lead Santa Clara (6-10, 2-1) to an 85-72 WCC victory over St. Mary’s (11-7, 2-1) at Moraga.
