More than 600 citations have issued since Jan. 1 to motorcycle riders not wearing helmets, California Highway Patrol officials said Monday.

Throughout California, 640 citations have been issued to 479 drivers and 161 passengers since the state’s new helmet law went into effect, CHP spokesman John Marinez in San Diego County said.

Motorcycle riders in San Diego County, however, fared well in the statewide traffic figures, with only 24 citations issued to 16 drivers and 8 passengers, Marinez said. San Diego’s total is low compared to Los Angeles County, where 279 citations were issued, and Orange County, where 59 motorcyclists were cited.

In 1991, more than 80% of the 569 motorcyclists who died on California highways were not wearing helmets, Marinez said.
