LIFE IN THE PUEBLOS by Ruth Underhill (Ancient City Press: $12.95, illustrated). Originally published in 1946, Underhill’s study of daily customs in the pre-Columbian Southwest was intended for juvenile readers. She conducted her research before Arizona and New Mexico became tourist centers and more of the native culture survived, carefully observing people as they went about their daily tasks of raising and preparing food, maintaining their dwellings, telling stories. The result is a sympathetic yet respectful introduction to regional Native American culture that notes both the similarities and differences in customs among different tribes.
