BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Dodger-Expo Makeup Plans Nearly Set

Plans reportedly have been made final for the Dodgers to play one of their three makeup games with the Montreal Expos at Dodger Stadium on Monday, July 13, the day before the All-Star game.

Montreal will be on the West Coast at that time, finishing a series in San Francisco on July 12.

The All-Star game is in San Diego, so the all-stars from both teams could arrive there by Monday night after the day game.

“Nothing has been confirmed at this point,” said Fred Claire, Dodger vice president.

But the plan has received the required approval from the National League and the players’ association.

The other two postponed games are tentatively scheduled to be made up in doubleheaders July 6 (twi-night) and 8 (day).

There has yet to be an approved plan for the rescheduling of the postponed game with the Philadelphia Phillies, but it probably will be made up as part of a doubleheader at Dodger Stadium between July 2 and July 5.

“We are not in favor of doubleheaders at any point. It is not something we look forward to,” Claire said. “No question, we have concerns with the burdens a doubleheader will place on our pitching staff. This is strictly out of necessity.”

Scouts say the Dodgers have a second base prospect. He is Roberto Mejia, 20, a recruit from the Dominican Republic who is batting .357 in 18 games for Class-A Vero Beach, with three home runs and 10 runs batted in in 18 games. “He is the best player the Dodgers have had at Vero Beach in years,” one scout said. . . . In a minor-league transaction that may affect the big-league roster, pitcher Greg Hansell was promoted from double-A to triple-A Albuquerque after compiling a 3-1 record, with a 2.55 earned-run average, for San Antonio in the Texas League. He had 29 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. . . . Hansell, a Kennedy High product, could challenge Pedro Martinez, who, like his older brother Ramon, is struggling with his control. Pedro has walked 17 in 31 2/3 innings while striking out 30 and recording a 4.26 ERA for Albuquerque.
