Marina del Rey : County Charge Proposed

Share

Los Angeles Councilwoman Ruth Galanter wants the financially strapped city to get a piece of Los Angeles County’s action in Marina del Rey.

Dusting off an old right-of-way agreement from the 1960s, Galanter this week introduced a motion asking city officials to take all appropriate steps to charge the county rent for an easement that runs under the marina’s boat channel. The land, now under water, otherwise would have been an extension of Pacific Avenue in Playa del Rey.

Galanter argues that the city is entitled to no less than 1% of the $25 million in gross revenues the county receives each year by leasing publicly owned land to developers who operate the marina’s apartments, hotels, shops, offices, restaurants and boat slips.

A spokesman for Galanter said an agreement between the city and county to allow use of the right-of-way expired in 1987 and negotiations to extend the easement agreement have been unproductive.

Ted Reed, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, responded angrily to Galanter’s proposal that the county pay rent to the city.

“What the hell are they going to do, not let people go in and out?” he said.
