The Southern Section has requested a meeting with Ocean View High School officials to investigate an altercation that followed the Seahawks’ baseball game Tuesday at Santa Ana, Commissioner Stan Thomas said Friday.

The section will hold a fact-finding hearing Wednesday concerning allegations that an Ocean View player threw a baseball at an umpire after Santa Ana’s 6-5 victory.

Thomas said he is concerned with the number of incidents at baseball games this season. The Orange County Baseball Officials Organization will meet with section officials to discuss concerns about security during and after games.

“What people have to understand that if these incidents continue, we may not have baseball as a sport anymore,” Thomas said. “That would be a shame.”

The section placed soccer on probation in 1984 after more than 100 reported incidents during matches in one season.

There was a second incident reported after a game Tuesday.

Los Alamitos police are investigating an altercation between juveniles and umpires in the parking lot at Los Alamitos High School after the Loara-Los Alamitos baseball game. Assault charges have been filed against umpires Pierre Bertolino and Bob Radder. Bertolino said he is also pursuing charges against the juveniles.

Detective Brendan Hayes said the police would, on completion, submit the case to the district attorney’s office for review. At that point, he said, they will decide who will be prosecuted.

Hayes also asked anyone who witnessed the altercation to contact the Los Alamitos Police Department.
