The Ojai Festival will be staged in typical grand fashion this weekend, giving audience members a chance to experience some of the music world’s most sophisticated artists.
Under the shade of Libbey Park’s stately oak trees, the 46th annual event will feature the first collaboration between stage director Peter Sellars and conductor Pierre Boulez.
The festival schedule:
* 8:15 p.m. Friday, Libbey Bowl
The Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group will perform Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire de Soldat” and Schoenberg’s “Pierrot lunaire.”
* 5 p.m. Saturday, Libbey Bowl
The Los Angeles Philharmonic, with soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson, tenor John Aler and baritone Kevin McMillan, will perform.
Featured works: Stravinsky’s “Four Etudes,” Copland’s “Short Symphony,” Ravel’s “Scheherazade” and Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” (complete ballet).
(Note: This concert is sold out, however lawn seating is available.)
* 9 p.m. Saturday, Ojai Presbyterian Church (304 N. Foothill Road) (SOLD OUT)
Musicians Gloria Cheng, piano; Ann Diener, flute; John Bruce Yeh, clarinet and prerecorded clarinet, and Howard Sandroff, computer-controlled specialization, will perform.
Featured works: Boulez’s “Notations,” Messiaen’s “Le Merle Noir” (1952), Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for solo clarinet, Messiaen’s “Quatre Etudes de Rythme” (1949-50), Boulez’s “Dialogue de l’ombre double.” (This listing reflects program changes made to include works by Olivier Messiaen, 1985 composer-in-residence, who died this year.)
* 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Libbey Bowl
Cho-Liang Lin on violin and Andre-Michel Schub on piano will perform Debussy’s Violin Sonata, Stravinsky’s “Due Concertante” and “Suite Italienne,” and Beethoven’s “Sonata in A, Op. 47" (“Kreutzer”).
* 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Libbey Bowl
The Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2; Bartok’s “Four Orchestral Pieces, Op. 12,” and Debussy’s “La Mer.”
