COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Women Sweep Miami Dade in Volleyball

Golden West, which has dominated competition in the state for the last two years, swept national power Miami Dade in a women’s volleyball match Wednesday at Huntington Beach.

The Rustlers, the two-time defending State champions, won, 15-2, 15-12, 15-10. Miami Dade (6-2) is ranked eighth in the nation in the Junior College poll.

Miami Dade won national titles in 1986 and 1989. California community colleges do not compete in the national tournament.

The victory was the 39th in a row for Golden West, which is 4-0 this season.

The Rustlers had little trouble in the first game, winning, 15-2, but things didn’t go so smoothly in the second. Miami Dade played well early and led, 11-4, before Golden West rallied.

The Rustlers scored the next eight points, with Debbie Howard’s kill putting Golden West ahead, 12-11. After Miami Dade tied the score, Golden West scored the final three points to close out the game. Becki Gehlke ended the game with a strong kill from the back row.

Gehlke also ended the match with a kill that gave Golden West a 15-10 victory in the third game. Tracy Schriber’s 13 kills led Golden West. Gehlke had 11. Heather Flaherty added eight kills for Golden West.

In another nonconference women’s volleyball match:

Orange Coast 3, El Camino 1--Middle blocker Bryn Gillis, a sophomore, had 11 kills and three solos blocks to lead the Pirates (2-0), who won, 15-13, 15-13, 4-15, 15-6. El Camino is 1-1.

In South Coast Conference water polo:

Golden West 15, Fullerton 9--Jose Renato Martinez had five goals and Ted Simpkins had three for host Golden West (5-0).

In nonconference water polo:

Orange Coast 20, El Camino 4--Rob Worthing had six goals and Mark Campangna had four for host OCC (5-5).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Orange Coast 3, Moorpark 1--The Pirates (3-2) took a 3-0 lead before Moorpark (1-5) scored on a penalty kick with seven minutes remaining. OCC’s defense allowed only four shots on goal. Ali Mossadeghi, P.J. Polowski and Jon Muir scored for Orange Coast.
