PREP ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Los Alamitos Beats Mater Dei in Girls’ Tennis
Los Alamitos, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division III, defeated Mater Dei, ranked No. 9 in Division I, 11-7, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Wednesday at Los Alamitos.
Susan Huberman and Laura Westphal each won two of three singles sets to pace the Griffins (6-1). Mater Dei’s Erika Asmuss, swept her sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.
In other nonleague girls’ tennis:
Western 12, Connelly 6--Debbie Jethva won her singles sets, 7-6, 6-1, 6-0, for host Western (6-0).
Edison 13, El Toro 5--Brooke Lacey swept her singles sets for host Edison (4-1). Denise Kenyon and Carin Crawford swept in doubles for El Toro.
Santa Margarita 18, Katella 0--No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Sandy Needham and Danielle Shedd each swept her sets without losing a game for host Santa Margarita (5-1).
Dana Hills 15, Woodbridge 3--Anna Zaricki and Elizabeth Stevens led Dana Hills (4-0) to a 9-0 sweep in singles.
Laguna Beach 12, Harvard Westlake 6--Freshman Michelle Bray swept at No. 1 singles, including a 6-2 defeat of Harvard Westlake’s top player, Romy Mehlman, to lead Laguna Beach (3-1), ranked third in Southern Section Division II. Harvard Westlake, the second-ranked team in Division III, is 2-2.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Corona del Mar 3, Mater Dei 0--Jennifer Stroffe had nine kills as the Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, easily defeated No. 4 Mater Dei, 15-5, 15-12, 15-5. Corona del Mar is 3-0.
Sunny Hills 3, Foothill 2--Rachel Hochgesang had 24 kills as visiting Sunny Hills rallied from a two-game deficit to win 13-15, 10-15, 15-12, 17-15, 15-4. Carolyn Sarnecki had 36 assists and five kills for Sunny Hills (4-0).
In Sea View League water polo:
Newport Harbor 20, University 3--Junior Nathan Andersen scored eight goals for Newport Harbor (1-1, 1-0). Jason Marsh, who had 11 saves, returned to the Sailors after being out four weeks with broken fingers on his left hand. University is 0-2, 0-1.
Saddleback 12, Woodbridge 10--Mario Valenzuela scored five goals for Saddleback (7-2, 1-0). Sophomore goalkeeper Austin Kirk had six saves for the Roadrunners.
Tustin 14, Irvine 9--Eric Scholten and Tony Lewis each scored five goals for visiting Tustin (3-5, 1-0).
Corona del Mar 21, Santa Margarita 4--Tom Norton and Brad Harrington each scored three goals for host Corona del Mar (1-2, 1-0).
In Sunset League water polo:
Fountain Valley 21, Westminster 1--Ofer Horn and Robert Causee had four for Fountain Valley (3-0, 1-0), which led, 11-0, after one quarter and 14-0 after two.
Edison 16, Huntington Beach 5--Jeff Toomire and Blake Selna scored three goals each for Edison (1-1, 1-0).
In nonleague water polo:
Canyon 30, La Quinta 5--Michael Kerr had 10 goals, Aaron Harries had seven and Jad Davis had six for host Canyon (6-5), which led 16-1 at the half.
